Isaiah 54:17Not a weapon formed against you will succeed. Every tongue that accuses you in judgment will be refuted. Such will be the lot of the servants of God, the triumphs I award them, thus says the Lord your God.Once again, our Pastor appeared in the headlines of the Wheaton Gazette. The case was a year and a half old and landed in the lap of the Honorable Jon Stafsholt in Traverse County. This particular judge was handpicked by the County Attorney, Matthew Franzese. Somehow the usual judges Hoff and Seibel were disqualified by same. The morning in court started over an hour late so the judge could read letters from supporters of Pastor Barnes. Trial was underway and Matthew Franzese called a few witnesses and showed the police cam. When it came time for Pastor Barnes to call his witnesses, (there were 5), Mr. Franzese objected stating that he had not received a witness list in writing from the pastor. The judge let the objection stand and refused the pastor any defense. From that, Judge Stafsholt found Pastor Barnes guilty of ALL three charges. By the way,. a fourth degree assault (felony) on a peace officer requires "demonstrable" evidence of an assault. There were no bruises or bandages required to the supposed head butting nor were there any photos of the officer after the alleged assault. A week later we received this from Matthew Franzese:
So, we appeared May 9th for sentencing. Our attorney filed motions for the court to reconsider the findings of guilty, considering the County Attorney had denied receiving something he most surely had received. No, the judge would have none of it, and sentenced the pastor to a year and a day, $2000 fine, and 3 years with a probation officer. Here is the witness list that the county attorney "did not receive." Well, I mean he did, just said he didn't.......Please note the date on both documents.
I am sure there are many of you confused over this whole "pastor in jail" thing. Here are some things from scripture that you might find interesting. Paul wrote a great deal of the New Testament from a jail cell. "The book of Acts closes with Paul imprisoned for two years in Rome (Acts 28:30). There he awaited his audience with the emperor Nero, to whom he had appealed against the charges brought by his religious enemies in Jerusalem. It is no doubt significant that the Jewish leaders in the capital had heard nothing about him from Judea, nor had anyone spoken evil of him to them. It was, after all, a trumped-up charge that had seen no resolution over several years. On the other hand, the Jewish leaders in Rome had heard of the “sect” to which Paul belonged. It was 'spoken against' everywhere, they said." John was exiled to a prison mine on the Island of Patmos and there he wrote the book of Revelations. Joseph and Jeremiah were imprisoned in the Old Testament. Peter, Paul, Silas, Barnabas; most all the disciple-apostles were imprisoned just prior to their martyrdom. II Corinthians 4:7 We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered; we see no answer to our problems, but never despair; we have been persecuted, but never deserted; knocked down, but never killed; always, wherever we may be, we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus, too, may always be seen in our body. Acts 28:25 "The Holy Spirit correctly spoke through the prophet Isaiah to your forefathers 26 when He said, Go to this people and say: 'You will listen and listen, yet never understand; and you will look and look, yet never perceive. 27 For this people's heart has grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted—and I would heal them.
