IS IT A
CHURCH, CULT OR A MINISTRY?
Your average "church"
which is usually open twice a week for services is not adequate for the changing
times in which we live. A sanctuary is needed for hurting and lost
people.
Jesus came for the
sick.
The teachers of the law asked the disciples in Matthew 9:11,
"why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" On
hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who
need a doctor, but the sick.
But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not
sacrifice.' For I have not
come to call the righteous, but sinners."
What is a cult?
Many
people from the community of Wheaton have labeled us as a cult. This at
first seems like a negative connotation, but does anyone even know what a cult
really is? Let's see what Webster says: a religion regarded as unorthodox;
a usually small group of people characterized by devotion. That can be added to,
but that works.
Okay, so far I am not offended by any of the above, how about
unorthodox, what does that mean? "Not following established ways of
thinking, breaking convention or tradition." We are indeed breaking
the bondage of "traditional religion." What did Jesus say about
certain traditional ideas, does adhering to a tradition promise you fellowship
with Jesus? (See TKC Distinctives)
Matthew 15
1Then some Pharisees and
teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2"Why
do your disciples break the tradition of the
elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!"
3Jesus replied, "And
why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
4For
God said, 'Honor your father and mother and 'Anyone who curses his father or
mother must be put to death.' 5But
you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might
otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' 6he
is not to 'honor his father' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the
sake of your tradition. 7You
hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8" 'These people honor
me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9They worship me in vain;
their teachings (traditions)
are but rules taught by men.' "
John 3:3
Now to define ministry.
"Service," that is, the responsibility and work that God commits to
believers in Christ, each according to the special capacity that God gives for
instructing and helping others. Service for Christ is not to be done out of a
desire to achieve merit or on the basis of a legalistic obligation. It is to be
done out of love and
gratitude to God for what he has done for us in Christ (Romans 12:1; John
21:15,16; II Corinthians 4:1-6).
Thy Kingdom Come is a church; with two licensed
pastors, two services per week, choir practice and weekly bible
study.
We don't label ourselves as a cult, but we are not
ashamed to adhere to the definition given on this page according to
Webster. We are a small group, not bound by tradition and in true devotion
to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We teach the BIBLE,
nothing more or less.
Finally, we are a ministry. We reach out to the hurting
people that cannot be helped by mainstream ideas and practices. Drug
addicts, alcoholics, homelessness, sick, discarded, hurting people that
God created and loves and Jesus came to heal.
If you know someone in need, maybe who
hasn't been helped by secular treatment centers or court ordered programs, we
are still open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Jesus is still the
answer.

Our Mission
This ministry, by the Grace of our Lord, will focus on these approaches. The scope of our
ministry is outlined in Isaiah 58 and Psalms 82.
Loose the chains of injustice and untie the
cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke.
Isaiah 58:6
To share your food with the hungry and to
provide the poor wanderer with shelter and when you see the naked, to clothe him
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood.
Isaiah 58:7
Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Psalms
82:4
Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from
the hand of the wicked. Psalms
82:4
These goals will be addressed through a ministry with housing, community
involvement; demonstration of family living skills, sound Biblical teaching,
evangelistic outreach into our community, promotion of Christ centered family
living and support for leaders.
We
know that spiritual warfare is vital to our daily victories in this walk.
I Peter 5:8 and I John 3:8 demonstrate that we have an adversary.
Daily spiritual warfare training is mandatory for the believer to
continue in the freedom God has granted. We
not only teach the warfare, but walk by example.
The direction of ministry will
always be fluid in nature enabling it to be responsive to the leading of the
Holy Spirit, responding as God directs to our Lord’s work.
